My name is James Stratford. I’ve been writing on this since 2008. I am a keen cyclist living in the GreenWedge of Melbourne, Australia. Most of my writing is inspired by own reflections on life as I navigate through challenges of my own life as a father, husband, student, writer, teacher and cyclist. I started writing this for my life coaching clients and the coaching/teaching element has remained at the centre. At the time I was also doing my PhD in Classics on the ancient hero Achilles in Homer’s Iliad. Far from just an academic pursuit, the hero’s journey is something that has guided my own approach to life for the past 20+ years and it finds its way into much of my writing.
Since the end of the PhD in 2010, the focus of my writing has been on cycling. Rather, it is the context, the living metaphor through which I explore internally and ask questions of myself and the world. Time on the bike is often a time for reflection on these major life transitions. I hope you find them useful, even inspiring, whether you’re a cyclist or not. It’s all about the journey, embracing all that it throws up at us and learning to honour the hero that dwells within each and every one of us.
